Sui's mainnet is back online after a nearly six-hour outage caused by a bug in its gas-charging logic, which temporarily halted transaction processing across the network.
Primary driver: A software bug during an epoch transition prevented validators from completing checkpoints, freezing user transactions and DeFi activity.
Secondary driver: The outage triggered roughly $1.88 million in SUI long liquidations as leveraged traders were caught in the price decline.
My view: The fact that user funds remained safe is positive, but repeated outages are becoming a concern for Sui's credibility as a high-performance Layer 1. Reliability is just as important as speed, especially for DeFi applications that depend on uninterrupted network access.
Key watch: The upcoming post-mortem and software updates will be critical. If Sui can demonstrate a lasting fix and maintain stable uptime over the next few months, confidence should recover. However, another major outage could significantly damage investor and developer trust.
